Athita The Hidden Court Chiang Saen Boutique Hotel received the Gold Medal in the Hotel and Resort category at the ASA Architectural Design Awards 2022. The award announcement was published by the Association of Siamese Architects under Royal Patronage on 7 April 2022. Designed by Studio Miti, Athita was recognised for an architectural approach that begins with the cultural landscape of Chiang Saen.
For Athita, architecture is not a statement placed over a historic town. It is a quieter way of making room for the place, its memory and the people who move through it.
Recognition rooted in place
The ASA Architectural Design Awards recognise architecture in Thailand. For Athita, the Gold Medal is meaningful because the hotel was conceived not as an isolated object, but as part of Chiang Saen’s long-lived cultural setting. The project stands beside Wat Athi Ton Kaew, where the ground in front of the temple has held importance for community and religious activity.
Studio Miti approached the site by first considering what should remain open. The design leaves a respectful buffer between the old temple and the hotel, allowing the temple’s presence, views and sense of scale to remain legible. This is a decision that guests can feel as they move through the property: arrival is gradual, and the spaces do not compete with their surroundings.
A contemporary hotel in a historic town
Chiang Saen is a northern Thai town shaped by layers of everyday life, historic structures and the wider Mekong landscape. The project’s architectural language responds to that setting through a simple L-shaped arrangement, a courtyard-like sequence of outdoor spaces, and a palette led by brick and wood. These materials introduce warmth and texture while maintaining a connection with the building traditions familiar to the town.
The project includes a restaurant, lobby, nine guest rooms in different configurations, a swimming pool and service areas. Rather than arranging these functions as separate spectacles, the plan gathers them beneath a long, calm form. The ideas behind the Gold Medal
The recognition at ASA Architectural Design Awards 2022 offers an opportunity to revisit the design choices that make Athita distinct. The first is restraint: the building steps back from its historic neighbour rather than claiming the foreground. The second is material character: brick and wood keep the atmosphere tactile, familiar and hospitable. The third is sequence: shaded thresholds, planting and open courts slow the movement from public spaces to private rooms.
These gestures are modest by intention. They frame the experience of a stay without overwhelming it. The architecture encourages guests to notice changing light on brick, the texture of wood, the breeze crossing an open court and the nearby presence of Chiang Saen’s cultural landscape.
Design that welcomes a slower stay
For travellers, the award story is inseparable from the experience of staying here. Athita offers a place to pause between visits to the old town, temple grounds and riverside scenery. The hotel’s design makes space for moments that are often missed when travel moves too quickly: sitting in the shade, crossing a garden edge, seeing the town through a carefully held opening, or returning to a quiet room after a day of exploration.
