Athita Hidden Court Chiang Saen Boutique Hotel was recognised with a Golden Pin Design Mark in the Spatial Design category of the 2023 Golden Pin Design Award. The project was also selected as a finalist for the Best Design Award. For us, this recognition is a quiet affirmation of an idea that has guided Athita from the beginning: hospitality can begin by listening closely to a place.

A hotel shaped by Chiang Saen
Athita sits in Chiang Saen, a historic town in northern Thailand where everyday life moves beside old walls, temple grounds and the Mekong landscape. The hotel was conceived as a contemporary retreat that remains attentive to this setting rather than competing with it.
The official Golden Pin project record describes the architecture as an interpretation of Chiang Saen vernacular architecture. Its planning introduces a buffer space between an old temple and the new hotel, using an L-shaped composition to preserve a sense of openness and distance. For guests, these decisions are not presented as a display. They are felt through slower transitions: a shaded threshold before a room, the changing texture of brick, garden views that soften a corridor, and spaces that leave room for rest. The aim is not to recreate the past, but to make a contemporary stay feel grounded in its surroundings.
Recognition at Golden Pin Design Award 2023
The Golden Pin Design Award is an international design award organised by Taiwan Design Research Institute. In 2023, the programme reported nearly 8,000 entries from 23 countries and regions. Within this context, Athita Hidden Court Chiang Saen Boutique Hotel received a Golden Pin Design Mark in the Architecture subcategory of Spatial Design. The record lists Studio Miti, Thailand, as the design company and Mrs. Nanthakarn Limjarean, Thailand, as the business owner. What the recognition means to Athita
An award does not replace the small moments that make a stay memorable. It does, however, invite us to return to the questions behind the hotel: How can a new building be considerate of a historic neighbour? How can material, shade and garden space help a visitor slow down? How can a hotel open a gentler introduction to Chiang Saen?
The Golden Pin recognition gives those questions an international context. It acknowledges the project’s spatial thinking while keeping the story close to home: Athita belongs to a town whose character is already present in its landscape, craft, rhythm and layers of history.
Design notes from the official project record
The project record highlights three ideas that continue to shape how we describe Athita. First is the relationship between the old temple and the new hotel, where a deliberate buffer creates breathing room between the two. Second is the L-shaped plan, which helps define a courtyard-like sequence of spaces. Third is the dialogue of wood and brick, materials that carry warmth, texture and a sense of local familiarity.
Together, these choices create an atmosphere that is calm rather than theatrical. Light, planted edges and material detail are allowed to do the work. The architecture frames a stay; it does not demand attention from it.
