Athita Pool Villa and Spa is an extended phase of Athita The Hidden Court, created on the banks of the Mekong in ancient Chiang Saen. It continues Studio Miti’s architectural dialogue with the town, expressing its spirit through the two materials that have long defined its built landscape: timber and brick.
Heritage on the banks of the Mekong
Chiang Saen is a riverside town shaped by centuries of memory. Its old walls, temples and ruins give the place a quiet depth, while its everyday dwellings reveal another kind of history in wood, shade and craft. Athita Pool Villa and Spa takes this heritage as its foundation, not as a surface reference but as a living context for contemporary hospitality.
The architecture is calm and restrained. It allows the character of the old city to remain present, drawing together local material, natural light, moving air and the experience of retreat. In doing so, the project extends the story of Athita The Hidden Court while creating a distinct place for rest, privacy and renewal.
Wood and brick as the language of the town
In Chiang Saen, ancient monuments and temples are built in brick, while people’s homes are traditionally built in wood. Brick can be read as the language of public life; wood as the language of domestic life. Athita Pool Villa and Spa reinterprets these two materials with a contemporary sensibility. Timber brings warmth, tactile detail and the presence of local craftsmanship, while brick connects the buildings to the monuments and city walls that surround them.
The result is a retreat that does not place history behind glass to be observed from a distance. Instead, heritage remains part of daily experience. Light, shadow, air and material texture hold a quiet conversation, giving the villas a sense of belonging that is both immediate and enduring.
The court as the heart of dwelling
Drawn from the idea of the khuang, the shared open court of traditional Lanna communities, each villa is conceived as an independent house with its own private courtyard. The pool meets the living area with little distinction between inside and outside, opening the stay towards greenery and the unhurried atmosphere of this Mekong-side town.
The spa is woven into the project as a further dimension of restoration. It offers a place to return to balance after a journey, surrounded by natural materials and the measured calm of the architecture. Project facts
Completed in 2024, Athita Pool Villa and Spa occupies 1,371 square metres and was designed by Studio Miti. The published project record credits photography to Spaceshift Studio.
