History of Songkran

“Unveiling the rich history of Songkran Festival, a timeless tale woven into Thailand’s cultural tapestry.”
.
Step back in time and explore the origins of Songkran, a celebration deeply rooted in ancient Hindu and Buddhist customs that mark the start of a new year. Water holds a special significance in these traditions, symbolizing purification and the washing away of sins during sacred ceremonies.
.
Derived from the Sanskrit word “saṃkrānti,” meaning a significant astrological moment, Songkran falls on April 13, according to the traditional Thai calendar. It’s a time for families to come together, honor elders, and show respect to sacred symbols like Buddha images.
.
At the heart of Songkran is a beautiful tradition: gently pouring water. This act, deeply cherished in Thai culture, signifies respect and seeks blessings from revered figures. It’s a symbol of cleansing, washing away past troubles to invite prosperity and good fortune for the year ahead.

🙏Wat Chetawan, also known as Wat Kaephueak or Wat Nangfa Kaephueak, is an ancient site with a unique art sculpture, the only one of its kind in Chiang Saen. It is believed to have been constructed around the year 2175 B.E. by Prince Sutthathammarama, a ruler during the Burmese occupation of Lanna and Chiang Saen.

Although it was under Burmese rule, the craftsmen who built the temple were likely Laotian or local Chiang Saen people influenced by the artistry of Lan Chang. Wat Chetawan has been registered as an archaeological site for the nation.
